Fantasy, like any genre, is a tool: a style of storytelling with both strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to help Christians think well about how the genre has been utilized, how it could be utilized, and what can make fantasy stories special and meaningful, fun or deeply instructive.

Karlissa J first started publishing novels in 2013. Years later, she and her husband Jason Koop started up Book-Bat: both as an extension of Karlissa’s authoring platform, and as an opportunity to do new creative projects together.

Through a podcast, blog posts, and books, Book-Bat seeks to start discussions around the fantasy genre. We dive into novels and shows, comics and video games, recent releases and the classics, from new Star Wars shows to George MacDonald’s 1895 Lilith.

Speaking of classics: Karlissa will soon release To Narnia and Beyond, an introduction to four Christian fantasy authors and how they used the genre for teaching spiritual truths. Subscribe to our newsletter and the Book-Bat podcast for updates and announcements concerning this latest project!

What do we mean when we say we explore fantasy from “a Christian perspective?”

Jason Koop

Jason enjoys Canadian winters, watching cute ferret and otter videos, reading a good book, and musing about the nature of art and storytelling. He is also married to Karlissa J and has four kids, and he has spread his fandom of Sonic the Hedgehog to all but the infant (who still has time to learn!).
